Lebt und arbeitet in Hamburg.
In Düsseldorf bei der Beuys-Warhol Ausstellung "Kunst = Kapital" begegnet sie Andy Warhol, der sie als künstlerische Assistentin nach New York in seine "Factory" einlädt. ISH: "Es war eine Zeit der Auseinandersetzung mit der europäischen und amerikanischen Kultur, vor allem meiner Kultur. Eine prägende Erfahrung für meinen weiteren Weg. Zeigte Warhol betont nur die Oberfläche der Dinge, versuche ich das zu zeigen, was sich der Begrifflichkeit entzieht, was sich hinter dem Sichtbaren verbirgt." Nach dem Examen 1981 bleibt die junge Künstlerin in New York, mietet ihr erstes Studio in Soho und arbeitet selbstständig. Sie findet ihren Stil: »Meine Arbeiten sind gegenstandslos, weil sie von der Wirklichkeit jenseits des physisch Erfahrbaren künden.«

MITRA FARAHANI was born in Tehran in 1975. From the age of fourteen she studied painting and drawing with various Iranian masters of pictorial art, notably with Gholem Hossein Nami.
After taking a baccalaureat in graphic art in 1992, followed by a degree in graphic art at the AZAD University in Tehran, she moved to Paris in 1998, and took up residence in the Cité Internationale des Arts.
In December 1999 she staged a Happening called ‘You Are Invited to a Funeral’. In 2001, she began a course of video studies at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, and made her first documentary. 26 minutes long, this was entitled ‘Just A Woman’. The film was chosen for the Berlin Film Festival and was awarded the Teddy Awards Special Jury Prize.
Her documentary ‘Zohre and Manouchehr’ (67 minutes) was presented at the Berlin Film Festival of 2004. This was later shown in cinemas in France and Canada with the title ‘Taboos’.
In 2005 she made the documentary “Behdjat Sadr: Suspended Time’, a portrait of one of the pioneers of Abstract Expressionist painting in Iran.
In November 2009, as part of the Three Continents Festival, Le Lieu Unique in Nantes presented her one-person multi-disciplinary exhibition. This comprised a video-installation, a painted screen, a group of drawings and some projected films.
Statement
For several years I have been painting screens. These screens have, for me, a direct link with the cinema.
During the first part of my career, painting affected my films. Now, in reverse, it is cinema that makes itself felt in my painting. The influence appears most clearly in the way in which the compositions are affected by the idea of cinematic sequences. The triptychs I made originally have been succeeded by compositions that are screens with multiple panels. Each element or each panel resembles a sequence in a film.
A screen, which gives the possibility of deployment in space, offers important compositional advantages. In particular, it makes it easier to put together a multitude of ideas that can be read both independently and in combination with one another. Screen compositions, and the spatial ambiguity that they permit, allow me more and more to produce the interpenetration of painting and cinema that I have always wanted to create.

After studying painting at the University of Tehran, Narmine Sadeg moved to Paris in 1977, and continued her studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, at the Sorbonne, and at the Paris-Diderot University. A former student of Christian Boltanski at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, she was, in the late 1980s, interested in multi-disciplinary installations.
In the early 1990s she showed her work at the Galerie Giovanna Minelli in Paris, which also represented Thomas Struth, Willie Doherty, Craigie Horsfield, Jean-Luc Moulène and Olivier Blanckart.
In 1992-3 she was awarded the Villa Médicis hors les murs prize. This enabled her to make several visits to the United States. While there she worked on a huge video installation project entitled Tell Me About Art, midway between art installation and documentary film. She was also artist-in-residence at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where she continued her investigations into the field of digital art. During a decade, from 1994 onwards, she concentrated on projects that made use of new media. However, her interest in materials finally led her back once again to sculpture, installation and painting.
Her recent work consists of mobile sculptures. These are half human beings, half toys, apparently delicately balanced. They evoke moments of suspense, of waiting for something to happen.
Narmine Sadeg’s work has been shown in a number of solo and collective exhibitions, in France and elsewhere, most notably at the Galerie Giovanna Minelli in Paris, at the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at the Centre d’Art Contemporain de la Villa Arson in Nice, and at the Galerie Basilisk in Copenhagen.
Since 2001, Narmine Sadeg has been professor of visual arts at the University of Bordeaux III.
Statement:
At first glance, Narmine Sadeg’s life-size dolls, installed on a steel tube that is thrust through their bodies and ready to sway back and forth with a single push, evoke a feeling of playfulness.
This feeling, however, fades with time. The dolls seem calm and resolute, but their movement is limited and they can do nothing about it – their situation seems tragic. “In my work,” Sadeg says, “I am interested in modes of display that limit the movements of my characters, constrain their actions, and force them to repeat themselves.”
Narmine Sadeg’s work does not reflect specifically Iranian traits, but offers a consideration of the human condition in a larger sense. Held by the rod that displays them, her characters are silent and reclusive, watching the world from a distance. If we look for what is Iranian in this work, we should perhaps look at the life of the artist herself – at the things that have influenced her concerns. Had she not been born Iranian, and without the events that have affected the recent history of Iran, would the same questions have emerged?

In seiner Lehre der „Philosophie der Lebensformen“ bezieht er schon seit 30 Jahren „leibpraktische Denkübungen“ ein. Er ist Ökonom, Künstler und Ausstellungsmacher, entwarf ein Ensemble von Ausstellungen zu dem „Körper als erstes Werkzeug der Kulturen“.
Er initiierte die „Karl Jaspers Vorlesungen zu Fragen der Zeit“ mit herausragenden Gästen aus vier Kontinenten, für die seine private Stiftung „Forum der Kulturen zu Fragen der Zeit“ eine Fortwirkung ermöglichen soll, inzwischen besonders für das Humboldt Forum in Berlin. Mit seiner „Naturbeherrschung am Menschen“ (2 Bde., 1974, bzw. 1985) hat er gesellschaftstheoretisch, sozialpsychologisch, aesthetisch die Bedingungen der Leiblichkeit und der Sinneswahrnehmung in der europäischen Moderne analysiert. In seinem „Sinnenbewusstsein“ (2 Bde., 1987, bzw. 2001) hat er die naturwissenschaftlichen, psychologischen und sozialgeschichtlichen Grundlagen einer „anthropologischen Aesthetik“ und deren Umsetzung in Alltag, Kunst und Transzendenz herausgearbeitet. Er wurde Fellow am Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. Bis 2005 gab er die Zeitschrift „POIESIS“ für praktisch-theoretische Beiträge zur „Ästhetischen Selbsterziehung“ heraus. Zur Zeit schreibt er an einer „Pluralen Ökonomie“. Im Herbst erscheint im Albert Verlag seine „Philosophie der Bewegung und des Wandels“.
